BOQ Switches off for Earth Hour

As a keen supporter of the environment, Bank of Queensland has jumped at the chance to get involved in Earth Hour in 2008.
On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour.
The first-ever Earth Hour was a huge success and achieved its objective of drawing people’s attention to the issue of Climate Change.
In 2008, Earth Hour is inviting all households and businesses across Australia and right across the world to turn off their lights between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday, 29 March.
Managing Director David Liddy said that as a supporter of the environment, Bank of Queensland jumped at the chance to get involved.
“We have always been strong advocates of any environmental initiatives, so when we heard about the opportunity to get involved with Earth Hour, we didn’t have to think twice.
“On 29 March, between 8pm and 9pm, we will be turning off the lights in our head office, branches, business banking centres and state administration offices, as well as our major lightboxes in all capital cities.”
According to the WWF, if Australia’s commercial sector turned off lights when buildings weren’t in use and combined this action with other energy efficient technologies they could reduce lighting emissions by up to 70 per cent, which would save around 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Bank of Queensland has long been a supporter of environmental initiatives and currently supports OzGREEN; an innovative environmental organisation that runs life changing learning and leadership programs for young people across Australia.
