Bank of Queensland has minted a limited number of Q150 commemorative coins to celebrate Queensland’s 150 years of independence from New South Wales.

Bank of Queensland Managing Director David Liddy said popularity of the APN Australian Publishing and Quest Community Newspapers Q150 commemorative coin giveaway prompted the Bank to get further coins minted to meet the demand from patriotic Queenslanders.

“It’s great to see so many proud Queenslanders out there wanting to collect a part of history,” Mr Liddy said.

“To keep it special we’ve only minted another 50 coins for each Bank of Queensland branch in Queensland.

“They can be purchased for five dollars and all proceeds from the commemorative coin sales will go towards the Bank’s sixth annual Banking on our Kids charity appeal, which runs throughout July and aims to raise more than $200,000 for the five major children’s hospitals around Australia.”

The coins will be on sale from Monday, 13 July and will be available while stocks last.

“The Bank has a unique bond with the State, including a history stretching back almost as long as Queensland’s and it’s exciting to celebrate and commemorate our great State in 2009.”

“It’s a very special year for all Queenslanders with Q150 reflecting the fascinating and powerful growth story that is Queensland’s history. There has been a lot of positive change during that time and for this I think we all should be justifiably proud.

“The Bank’s involvement with Queensland’s 150th celebrations is in keeping with our commitment to support the communities in which we operate. During our 135-year history, we have grown hand-in-hand with the Queensland community, and our unique Owner-Managed Branch model saw us achieve a national presence in 2007, with branches now in every Australian state and territory.”

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said the Q150 Commemorative Coin was a great idea.

"What a fantastic way to celebrate our Queensland's 150th birthday year and the presence of the Bank of Queensland in this state from the early days of European settlement," she said.
