BOQ Switches off for Earth Hour

Wednesday, 25/03/2009

Bank of Queensland will switch off its lights and vote Earth on Saturday, 28 March at 8.30pm for one hour to support Earth Hour 2009.

Managing Director David Liddy said that as a supporter of the environment and a sustainable future, Bank of Queensland jumped at the chance to get involved again this year.

“On 28 March, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, we will be turning off the lights in our Brisbane head office and roof sign as well as our state administration offices,” Mr Liddy said.

“We have always been strong advocates of any environmental initiatives, so when we heard about the opportunity to get involved with Earth Hour again, we didn’t have to think twice.

“At Bank of Queensland, we take our corporate social responsibility seriously and a huge part of this responsibility is to protect and enhance the environment in which we operate.

“We are continually working to reduce our environmental footprint through a number of energy-saving and recycling initiatives we have in place at the Bank.

“We’ve invested in new energy efficient equipment to reduce electricity consumption, fitted taps with flow restrictors to conserve water in our head office and are committed to paper recycling and using recycled products where possible.

“Nationally we’re also encouraging our staff to embrace Earth Hour and help the environment through our staff intranet, which provides a range of useful tips for a greener planet.”

Earth Hour runs from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on 28 March.

In 2009, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.  WWF are urging everyone to vote Earth by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. The first-ever Earth Hour was a huge success and achieved its objective of drawing people’s attention to the issue of climate change and efforts to combat global warming.

Bank of Queensland has long been a supporter of environmental initiatives and currently supports OzGREEN; an innovative environmental organisation that runs life changing learning and leadership programs for young people across Australia.
